Animalier Gilt Metal Roaring Lion Presse-Papier

A detailed Antique Presse-Papier, or paper weight, depicting a magnificent crouching lion mid-roar upon a naturalistic, craggy plinth. This piece is characteristic of the Animalier School of sculpture, popularized in France during the 19th century, which celebrated realistic depictions of animals. The lion's posture—muscles taught, mouth open in a fierce roar, and mane dramatically rendered—exudes power and regal authority, making it an imposing and sophisticated desk accessory.

Made from heavy cast metal, in the 1930's-1940's, with a rich, gilt finish with patina. The exact sculptor this was made after is unknown, metal figures like this were produced well into the late 20th century, when Lions Club International had them made {in a lighter metal with a copper color or brass} to be presented as awards. This timeless piece of decorative art brings a sense of grand, old-world library charm to your desk, bookshelf, or library.
