Antique Flow Blue Floral Plate Hibiscus Flowers

This elegant antique Flow Blue plate features a floral pattern, richly decorated with hibiscus blossoms and scrolling foliage in deep cobalt blue that softly flows into the creamy ground—an admired hallmark of 19th-century Flow Blue. Produced by Hill Pottery, the reverse bears the maker’s red mark, also bearing the retailer’s mark of Bellino & Fenderich, Odessa, reflecting the export trade of English ceramics to Eastern Europe in the 19th century. Bellino & Fenderich were ceramic and household goods merchants, importing English pottery—particularly Staffordshire Flow Blue for sale to the prosperous Black Sea market. Odessa was a major cosmopolitan port city at the time, with strong trade ties to England, making it a natural destination for British ceramics.

Plates bearing both manufacturer and retailer marks are rare and especially appealing to collectors. The boldly scaled hibiscus flowers and graceful curvilinear border create a dramatic yet refined presence, ideal for wall display, cabinet presentation, or layering into a curated table setting. Light crazing, small age spots and gentle surface wear are consistent with age and contribute to the authentic character of this antique piece. A beautiful example of the Althea pattern, combining botanical artistry, rich color, and historical provenance.
