Antique Spode Gothic Castles Large Blue and White Staffordshire Platter, made by Spode in 1815-1821. Spode is one of the oldest and most distinguished of the great pottery companies of Staffordshire. Josiah Spode began manufacturing fine quality earthenware and porcelain at Stoke, Staffordshire, England in 1770. Transfer printed in blue with a castle in a chinoiserie garden landscape surrounded by a border with cameos of figures and animals {deer. elephants, giraffes and horses.}
This charming pattern combines European architecture with an oriental landscape, typical of the first transitional period of Staffordshire pottery patterns which joined 'Chinese' or 'oriental' motifs with British and European designs. Shown in 'The Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery 1780 - 1880', Vol. I., Woodbridge by A. W. Coysh, and R. K. Henrywood. p. 161.
