given by the WCTU {Women’s Christian Temperance Union}. The original purpose of the WCTU was to combat the negative effects of alcohol on families and society. Soon afterwards, the WCTU got involved in other social reform movements, including labor, public health, and women’s suffrage.
This award pin was most likely given to a young woman who would have won a speaking contest hosted by the WCTU. In good antique condition, the shield hangs from a banner with the WTCU engraved on it. The shield is engraved with Declamatory - which loosely translates into an impassioned speech. Has the c clasp of the 19th century. A fun part of women's history!
