Rare to find these days, avidly collected, this truly amazing frame dates to the mid to late 19th century, the shells are mounted on thick board which was first covered in dark paper. Many of these frames had glass inside, this one did not. From a collector's estate, the frame has a fantastic variety of shells, glowing pearlized turret shells outline the perimeter. The background is covered by glittering silver colored chips, or sand from a black beach.
The photograph of the little sailor boy is original, you can slip in your own photo from the top. That these delicate pieces survived over a century is more a testament to how much they are beloved and cared for by the collector than anything else. I am always thrilled to find one of these for you, this has the original easel back, amazing! A decorative gorgeous frame for your maritime collection. Measures 9-1/2" x 8-1/2".
