Started in France in the early 1800's the custom of carrying {and leaving} calling cards was a social custom that became highly popular all through Europe and the United States.  Used by higher society, ladies and gentlemen would leave a card when calling on their friends on a specified day of the week when the host or hostess would be "at home."

This Victorian Calling Card is a special one for your collection. Decorated with light blue silk fringe, it features a miniature envelope, embellished with a die cut embossed scrap featuring an elegant hand holding a card with "To one I admire" printed on it, and beautiful pink and red roses. Inside, a tiny card with the admirer's name. I imagine this type of card would accompany a gift of roses, or French chocolates, or even champagne or a fabulous piece of jewelry. Dates to the 1800's. A rare collectable addition to your paper ephemera collection. Measures  4-1/4" x 2".
