Long ago, homes in Europe were heated with coal burning stoves and small heaters, before central heating became widely available. As a little girl, our household had one of these coal scuttles, or hods, to gather coal from the coal shed in the garden for fuel. I love that these are now being repurposed into decorative elements for the home. Purchased in France, these have a stencilled house number on them, they were traditionally kept in the alleyways behind French homes, the number kept the hod from "wandering." Three are zinc grey in color, No. 378 is painted black.

Brocante, as the French say, they have wear and the bumps and bruises from decades of use, as a useful antique you would expect this. A great piece to display in your French Country home, with your enamel or garden collection, to hold walking canes by your front or kitchen door. Fill it with great bunches of twigs in bloom, or flowers {you will need to insert a glass container for the water if using real flowers as not all are water tight} for a fantastic centerpiece for a buffet table, or on your garden dinner table. Measure between 19~1/2" ~ 21~1/2" high, 9~1/2" ~ 11~1/4" wide. Please choose the one that speaks to you, or several for a great collection!
