Fantastic collectible French Stoneware Match Striker, called a "pyrogen". Pyrogen were found on all tables of French cafes until about 1930, one of the first promotional and advertising items distributed to cafe and bistro owner to advertise spirits. This particular striker advertises Mineral Water, "the pearl of table water", mineral water was considered a healthy drink reserved only for the wealthy in the 1800's, early 1900's.
This French promotional match striker is white with blue trim, blue lettering and a small touch of yellow. "L eau Pure d'Ardeche " La Perle des Eaux de Table and Ardent Aubenas in blue lettering. The top has the traditional ribbed threaded sides for striking non-safety matches. The match striker is not marked, these are getting more difficult to find, prized by collectors, will light up your kitchen, bar or your own bistro with its presence. Measures 3~1/2" x 2~1/2" h.
