Rare and exceptional set of 6 19th century Keller and Guerin Luneville Asparagus plates and large Master Asparagus Serving Tray. Purchased from a collector in Europe, the gorgeous large handled master asparagus server or cradle has a raised design of ribboned asparagus and artichokes on a bed of leaves in bold colors of Aqua {turquoise}, Yellow, Purple, Lavender, Pink, Green and White. Six plates with scalloped rims have a country basket weave design on a wide yellow border. Each was individually molded and hand painted, then glazed, each is unique. Lettuce and asparagus, in raised relief, flank the sauce well in the center. The plates are in excellent age related condition, so stunning with vivid glazing and vibrant colors.

The Luneville factory was founded in France in 1730, producing their popular Majolica wares in the latter half of the 1800's under the management of Keller and Guerin. They were well known for their whimsical asparagus services, their unique designs, and their use of bright glaze coloration.

It is rare to find a complete service for 6, much less in the wonderful condition of this lovely set. Asparagus were highly prized, a luxurious delicacy in 19th century France, their presentation was considered important, and a way to reflect the status of the hostess. French Barbotine pieces are among the most prized. If you have a love for Artichauts et Asperges, and pride yourself on setting the most elegant tables for guests, or simply wish to display this set as part of your prized collection, don't miss the chance to own this heirloom quality set. Of note, two small chips on the bottom only of plate {shown} and then of course that fabulous craquelure you want to see on pieces of this age - mid to late 1800's.
