Decorative Art Nouveau Match Safe with striker, this is such a beauty. Match safes {Vesta in England} were  quite popular, they made matches reachable anywhere to light up a cigar or pipe, right there in a man's pocket. The friction match was invented around 1820s, they were prone to spontaneous combustion, as they needed only slight friction to catch fire, even in one's pocket. Match Safes were designed to protect men from this, fireproof, light and portable.

The highly ornate repousse design features a boy & girl under an umbrella, they are sitting together on a fence railing, this is known as a Kate Greenaway design. I particularly love the branches and oak leaves around this design that decorate both sides of this rectangular shaped case.  Such a charming piece to add to your collection of Pocket Vestas, or Match Holders, or a luxury gift for someone you love. Unmarked, German Silver over nickel, dates to 1893- 1910.
