Set of Two Early Cut Sponge Flow Blue Dodecagon Plates, 12 sided, a more rare shape to find, as most of the stick spatter pieces are round. Beautiful deep cobalt color, these beauties were decorated with the “stick spatter” method, where the artist used small pieces of sponge shaped into patterns mounted onto the end of a stick and then dipped in paint. Once dipped, the paint was applied to the pottery and dried to be glazed. The earliest period during the 1840’s and early 1850’s was known as “brush stroke” technique era – which is when this ironstone was produced.
These two are in wonderful condition for their age, they are from the early to mid 1800’s. The design is also more difficult to find, a circle of leaves and berries surround the perimeter with a lovely foliate floral ad berry design in the center. In fantastic condition, you can see the where the plate rested on the kiln cones when being fired, which is what you want to see on older plates like this. There is just the right amount of age and patina on these two. Marked with an impressed numeral 3. Sold as a pair, a sterling addition to your collection of blue & white!
