Mother-of-pearl carving is a traditional art in Bethlehem, brought to the city in the 15th century by Franciscan friars. The first exhibition in the West of mother-of-pearl artifacts from Palestine was at The World’s Fair in New York in 1852. Giries and Ibrahim Mansur exhibited their artistically carved mother of pearl work at The World’s Fair in New York in 1852. It’s when the western world discovered Mother of Pearl, and it’s been beloved ever since.
The carved star is set in a domed pendant with a celluloid cover to protect it. The chain is a dark aged color. Such a lovely necklace that is elegant yet casual.
