Fabulous Antique Austrian Figural Dogs Tobacco Jar by Johann Maresch, one of the most charming examples I have seen. Rare to find, as this has two dogs, instead of the more common single pup. Made of hand painted terracotta, this tobacco jar or humidor is in the form of two very handsome puppies. Johann Maresch (1821 – 1914) is very beloved and known for his exceptional ceramic and terracotta figures. I have really upped the resolution and clarity so you can see every single little bit of them.
These two best friends have beautiful detailed expressions, and are certain to make you smile. This is one of those wonderful tobacco boxes you look for to be the star of your collection. Their expressive faces show that they are very nice, but don’t mess with them! They look to be real characters, they will always protect each other and the people they love. From the late 1800’s, in good antique condition with wear as shown, a chip on one paw seen on the underside. There are some areas of loss as is to be expected, they still have a glow. Some edge chips as well, these two darllings are over 144 years old. Marked on the bottom with the JM impressed mark.
