Exceptional, fine and impressive English Sterling Silver Wine Funnel made in Birmingham, England; part of anyone's diverse wine and drinks related silver collection. I bought this from one of my "secret" silver dealers in Europe, it was the nicest she had, from a Belgian estate. This beautiful sterling silver wine funnel has a plain circular rounded form, embellished by a shell motif. Wine funnels first became common towards the end of the 18th century; the wine needed to be filtered before drinking.
With the modern wine making methods wine funnels are generally used for decanting wine. The decorative pierced platform on this one is in the shape of a star, the original piece of muslin is still there too, which is fitted between the pierced section and the spout. A luxury addition to your collection of sterling silver, marked with the lion passant and the emblem for Birmingham. A fabulous gift for your favorite host or hostess.
