Exceptional Vermeil 800 Silver Compact with a gorgeous enameled top featuring a hand painted bucolic setting of a lovely young woman in a garden being serenaded by her dashing young man on a wind instrument, possibly a baghèt, Italy's form of bagpipe. She has a basket of roses by her side. The center has a surround of turquoise enamel, and hand chased designs around the sides. The bottom has beautiful decorative scrolls or large plumes.
Surrounding the mirror on the inside of the lid are engraved gilt accents. Marked 800 inside for the silver standard of Continental Europe. An enchanting addition to your collection of antique and vintage compacts, this one dates to the first half of 1900, most likely 1940. Closes well. A delight!
