Under Louis XIV ébénistes introduced gilded bronze decorative elements to further enhance their exceptional works of art - doors and furniture. Made by special fondeurs-ciseleurs, who worked the metals before they were gilded. Called ormolu in the 18th century, for applying finely ground, high-karat gold to a bronze object. {The French refer to this technique as bronze dore.} This piece, is now a slightly quirky but oh so elegant souvenir.
