Portraits in miniature continue to fascinate us centuries after they were painted! They are usually 18th to 19th century paintings created after the work of famous artists, petite copies painted by other artists as souvenirs for the early Grand Tour traveler, or commissioned portraits of persons of "good" birth. This small painting is the former.
Remarkable French hand painted portrait miniature on thin wafer, a copy of a fashion print by Le Clerc, behind glass. I am not quite sure if this is slightly risque....to me, the fact that the lady on the arm of the gentleman is showing quite a bit of leg might have certain meaning. The painting is superb, with impressive fine details, the dress of both gentleman and ladies beautifully accented with lace, ribbons, ruffles, and patterns.
A highly collectible addition to your antique paintings and a delight to display with your fashion prints, or antique dresses, hats, parasols and all things delicious in your dressing room or boudoir. The painting is nestled in a wood frame with metal loop for hanging. The frame has aging and wear commensurate with age. Measures 5" x 4~1/4" x 3/8".
