Exquisite collectible French Holy Water Font or benitier has a large silver plated Medallion designed and signed by the celebrated French sculptor and engraver Louis Octave Mattei. Mattei was born in the later 1800's and studied under the master Tonnelier, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris.
The medallion shows the Virgin Mary with Lilies, the flower of purity. It is very prettily framed with a lovely draping bow at the top. The frame is engraved with fine lines and cross ribbons in the classical French decorative style. The Holy Mother is shown in profile with a lovely , gentle expression, she has her halo, it is signed L. O. Mattei.
Mounted on an attractively shaped piece of marble with a brass back, the marble is a Cream White. At the base is the holy water font, made of clear glass with ornate brass trim, attached with a flower to the marble. The back is plain with a solid ring for hanging. Larger than most, this has an old repair where the marble veining seperated on the bottom, most is behind the water font. It is securely attached to the backing.
