Exquisite French hand colored print, in a decorative gilt over gesso wood period frame.  It is a rare treat to be able to find this stunning Boudoir Print, in the original frame, from the late 1800's. The original is in the Paris's Musée du Louvre, the artist was Sigmund Freudeberg, a Swiss artist born in 1745 who died in 1801. This particular print is very very softly colored with golden yellows, the hand colored and painted mat has golden tones and gilt, cream and black hand drawn detailing.

The print is called "Le Bain" {the bath}, Boudoir prints like this were very popular in the late 1700's, and caused quite a stir, as some in polite society felt they put the onlooker in the position of "voyeur", while others at court delighted in these slightly erotic and risque etchings.  Not only does this print imply the sensual world of the aristocratic woman {note the love letter the maid is holding out to her mistress, Zelis, implying that perhaps a suitor wants to rendezvous later}, but they are also an exceptional history of French fashion. A lush portrayal of French life long ago, with all the costume detailing and charm we love, this print tells its story in a lovely, superbly "French" fashion.
