Incredible 19th Century Hand Made Maltese Silk Shawl Scarf or perhaps a table runner, it's one of the most beautiful pieces of Maltese Bobbin Lace I have found outside of a museum. I know if you are a lace collector you will greatly admire it and keep it safe. Made on the island of Malta, this lace includes the distinctive Maltese Cross.
Small flat leaves are repeated to display the shimmering luster of the ecru silk to its best advantage. These typical "wheat ears" or leaves were copied from Genoese bobbin lace, and became a standar design when this lace making by hand was revived in Malta in the 1830's. Made of three segments, in beautiful condition, there may be a few small breaks in the brides. Stunning.
