Luxurious Antique Asparagus Set, late 1880's by Villeroy & Boch. Rare size, collectible shape & color makes this a prized addition to any collection. Villeroy & Boch was founded in 1836 by Jean-François Boch and Nicolas Villeroy, and dates back to 1748, when Francois Boch set up shop in Audun-le-Tiche, a small village in Lorraine, France. Empress Maria Therese of Austria wooed the Bochs to Steptfontaines, Luxembourg, with her royal patronage. Boch was one of the most successful factories on the continent.
The serving platter has elegant decorative molded details, Turquoise bordering the bright Yellow Asparagus tipped in Aqua Green on the platter, all hand painted and trimmed in bright Gold. Fantastic size, while most majolica asparagus cradles and serving plates feature the European White Asparagus, this one has delicate Yellow spears beautifully molded and painted.
A true heirloom addition to your collection, or to serve at table for a true asparagus feast. The nine plates are an unusual shape that echo the master platter. In wonderful antique condition, there is craquelure as you would expect, and one of the plates does have a hairline that has been there at least for many decades, and does not go all the way through. Wonderful for display and use.
