Exquisite Santos or Madonna Tiara dating from the mid 19th century. Stunning large size, it graced the head of a nearly life-sized religious statue. Santos or Madonna crowns are becoming increasingly hard to find. This one is beautifully created of ormolu repousse, with stunning scrollwork and prongset Lavender Purple cut glass jewels.  The largest stone measures 1~1/4" x 7/8". This is a fabulous addition to your collection of religious or opera crowns and tiaras. Extremely rare to find, rarely seen ornamenting statues today in Catholic churches across France, each surviving crown is a special part of French history, especially beloved by collectors. Crown measures 3~7/8" x 6~1/4". {Last photo shows some of the crowns we bought in Europe on our buying trip, more to come!}

Destroyed during the French Revolution, crowns like this were remade during the period from 1850-1890 {each parish took up donations from parishioners to purchase these iconic items.} Around 1940, the Pope ordered the sale of all items in the Catholic parishes of France that were not "completely necessary". Santos and Madonna crowns, along with vestments and statues were unceremoniously sold at that time to the antique market.
