Rare to find 1813 Spode Blue and White Caramanian Series Ottoman Empire Plate, entitled 'Sarcophagi & Sepulchres at the Head of the Harbour at Cacamo'.
This decorative double indented shape was introduced by Spode specifically for the Caramanian series. Each plate in this series was taken from Luigi Mayer's book Views in the Ottoman Empire, chiefly in Caramania which was published in 1803. Surrounded by an exotic border of elephants,rhinoceros, palm trees and other eastern vignettes, this scene shows the Sarcophagi and Sepulchres at the Head of the Harbour at Cacamo.
Each shape has a different view, but share an exotic border of palms, elephants and rhinoceros, together with other 'eastern' vignettes. In excellent condition, so rare to find in such good order. Fine rippled glaze, the back has an impressed lower case Spode mark and a 2.
