When my girls were small, our fall and Thanksgiving decorating was more home-made-turkeys-out-of-pinecones and sweet little drawings taped on the kitchen wall. It was a time that I cherish, but times have changed and now my decorating is a lot more simple, and hopefully more elegant! The colors that make our antique filled home look at its best are the more muted, natural colors with cream, soft green, blue and touches of silver and gold.

You may have read recently that I finally got the antique French trumeau mirror of my dreams, and it is the perfect complement to the 18th century French marriage armoire in the living room. It looks wonderful over our mantel. I really couldn’t wait to dress it up for the season.
I am thankful for every day, but there is something about the autumn, when we are safe and snug at home, that really makes me feel so very grateful for all our blessings. Do you feel like that too?
I chose this fresh magnolia wreath from The Magnolia Company as the beginning of our living room mantel autumn design. It is made by hand by the Magnolia Company, with magnolia leaves grown and harvested on their own family farm. The Magnolia Company Farm is located in Central Florida where the warm sunshine and frequent rain showers blanket their groves of gorgeous Southern Magnolia Trees. The family business began by supplying fresh cut foliage wholesale to florists in1936, and today creates magnolia wreaths and decorations that are loved by customers all over.
You’ve probably seen their work everywhere and never even knew it! {the White House, Barneys New York, Oprah’s Favorite Things, to name just a few}
The colors in the wreath were the inspiration for my French Country autumn mantel. I gathered a few velvet pumpkins in white, brown and green, an antique book, some French candlesticks, and a few antique silver trophies to place on the mantel. It still “needed” something, so a favorite faux garland of rose leaves was tucked in the back. The largest silver trophy holds a collection of pheasant feathers that I’ve had for years, they always make an appearance somewhere here at FrenchGardenHouse for the autumn.
Finally, after pruning the hydrangeas in the back garden, Mr. FGH produced three crispy dried bright green hydrangea blooms from our Annabelle, which I tucked in here and there.
To hang the wreath on our antique French mirror I used a 3M Command Hook. I love these since they are completely removable without any damage to surfaces. You can buy them everywhere {Target, Ace, etc.} and they come in different sizes to hold up different weights.
A mantel is the perfect canvas to create a beautiful design element for the season. If you don’t have a mantel, this will work wonderfully on any horizontal surface, a shelf, your buffet, your entrance hall table. You can design your own mantel decoration, here are some tips >
To add a variety of textures, I added some antique French and American silver plate trophies. This larger one has such a pleasing shape, and is the perfect vase for my bouquet of feathers. On the other side of the mirror the antique French trophy balances the arrangement, I nestled a tiny green velvet pumpkin inside. The mixed metals always make me happy, the silver plays off the antique brass of the candlestick with joy.
The best part of creating a mantel in fairly neutral colors like this is that it works beautifully from the beginning of autumn through Thanksgiving. I don’t know about you, but at the end of the day, as the light begins to fade, it makes my heart happy to light the candles, light the fire in the fireplace, and drink a cup of tea in this room.

It is just remarkable how each of the four of you that participate in Monday Morning Blooms has selected a wreath and presented it so beautifully. The Fall Season is too short! The glorious colors found everywhere, and the temps

Lidy, your living room is so pretty and adding the trumeau makes it. I have loved the antique armoire ever since you got it. I would love to get rid of my china cabinet and replace it with an antique armoire if only the Mr would agree. The 3M Command hooks makes it so easy to hang everything. No searching for the correct nail and the hammer and the wonderful part is being able to hang anything anywhere like your trumesu. I too would love the plain magnolia wreath as that’s what I was raised with in the South.
