I am always thrilled with a “new” supply of the antique and vintage Cafe au Lait Bowls from France, each a little treasure with its own story to tell.
There are so many different kinds, from this Faience French Country Bowl, above, with its hand painted Florals in Pink and Blue….
To this simply shabby & chic one with delicate gilded edging design, which looks like a little garland to me.
Some have sweet floral bouquets put on with transfers, like these above. Three different little floral arrangements per bowl ~
Some have French Courting scenes like the ones shown above ~ how fun would it be to drink your special Coffee from that?
Three great old scenes of two young French lovers, during courtship time in a lovely garden setting.
Little Transferware Cups like this were loved, and well used every day for the Cafe, and to dunk a little toast in at breakfast, before starting the day.
Some of them are solid with striped tops. They have the prettiest soft colors, like the Mint Green ones above.
And some are just very special, like this antique Victorian era Souvenir de First Communion Bowl. The little “Communicant” is surrounded by White Lillies, Angels, the altar is covered in Antique Lace, the little Boy is wearing his Moiree Ribbon “Bow” typical for the period. A treasure!
Something for everyone! The cafe au lait bowls are still being produced all over France, as this is the traditional coffee cup there. It’s so much more condusive to linger a little over breakfast, something we don’t do too much, grabbing a mug of coffee instead, and heading out the door! The new ones are quite affordable, around $16.00 a bowl, and we sell plenty of those at FrenchGardenHouse. Although my real love is for these old, old ones
