Antique French Wooden Mailing Boxes, with remnants of the orignal wax seals, hand written address labels, and stamps. Boxes like this were used to transport precious contents through the mail; jewels, gold, or medication. The box, covered in paper with the addressee's information, was tied with string and sealed with wax.
Both the shipper and the recipient would thus be able to ensure the contents was not tampered with nor stolen when delivered if the seals were intact. Both boxes are a decorative reminder of shipping before cardboard boxes were invented. The larger box was used by a Pharmecie to ship medication, the smaller one most likely held jewels or jewelry. Fabulous, a little quirky, and an addition to your collection with plenty of personality. Measure: 3-7/8" x 3" x1-7/8"; 2-3/4" x 2" x 1".
