In Love with French Aqua Antique Glass

Hello everyone! I am so happy to be able to share some of these wonderful antique French glass bottles and jars we just got in.  It’s been a great afternoon for a photo shoot here in the garden, the sun shone brightly, and as you can see our lavenders are coming back in full force.

Each and every one of these antique French glass pieces is wonderful.  Most are hand blown, some into a one piece mold, others have a line to show that they were blown into a two piece mold.  I chose only pale aqua blue glass this time, it’s such a pretty color!  Especially when the light hits it just right, as in these few photographs.

The Demijohns were wine flasks, each is hand blown and so beautiful. The perfect vase for a few flowers, or just to display as an objet d’art.  I have seen these used as a great decorative accent filled with “used” wine corks from special vintages too. Don’t you just love this pale aqua color?

These vintage French yoghurt bottles are so pretty, to use to serve drinks, milk, or as a vase, they bring French Country charm everywhere.  Sometimes here at home I line them up on our table, to hold a single bloom, or  I put them in one of our antique bottle carriers.

One or more just give every setting a special French farmhouse feel, don’t you think?

Our latest antique glassware finds are available now in the shop: HERE for demijohns and HERE for the Pickling Jars and Yoghurt Bottles.

Thanks so much for reading my blog…I love to share my finds and days with all of you.

Weekly Favorites: Antique French Enamelware Body Pitchers

French Enamelware comes in many shapes, colors and sizes.

Pitchers like this were used for bathing before indoor plumbing was invented. A bowl and pitcher, like these, were a mainstay in each bedroom in a fine to middle class home, often on a special “wash stand” with a mirror.

In more modest households, there was usually only one set in the kitchen or wash room. Useful as well as beautiful, it’s most often the pitchers that collectors seek out. These make wonderful display pieces, watering cans for your plants, or the perfect vase to display a abundance of Roses! 1. Flow Blue 2.French Country Blue 3. White 4. Aqua Blue rose

Weekly Favorites: All Shook Up, Salt Shakers

Salt is something we take for granted these days. Yet at one time salt was a highly prized, quite expensive and worthy of the most expensive, elaborate holders. Historically, salt was symbolic of social standing and economic standing, not only in society, but even within the same family.

Superstitions and prestige associated with salt holders were due to the scarcity and high prices for salt. Leonardo de Vinci placed an overturned salt dish in front of Judas Escariat in his painting The Last Supper, because he considered it an ill omen.

During the Middle Ages in Europe, dishes for salt were elaborate, and richly decorated, more than that, the salt container marked the boundary line on the table between honorable estate and land owners and the “common” guests, which is how the English term “below the salt” was born, indicating someone of little or no social importance. For centuries salt was carefully placed on the table in dishes with a tiny salt spoon, in just the “right place!

For a time, salt was dispensed in little salt mills, like a pepper grinder, as salt was still sold in the original “rocks” and needed to be ground down. It is believed that John Mason {who invented those darling Mason Jars} invented the very first salt shaker. He punched several holes in a small mason jar, and viola! a shaker was born. Decades later, the Morton Salt Company added magnesium carbonate to their salt for better flow, and the salt shaker truly came into its own.

There are many Salt Shaker collectors, the wonderful thing about collecting Salt Shakers is that it takes up relatively little space. There are a whole range of beautiful shakers and salt & pepper sets, some of my favorites are those that are made of cased glass, and the handpainted porcelain shaker sets.  We were lucky to purchase a collection of outstanding examples recently, made by Consolidated Glass & Lamp Co. and porcelain sets by Limoges and Austrian porcelain manufacturers.

Want to know more about salt? This is a great article, filled with everything you will ever want to know about salt. Go to see the gorgeous Victorian Salt & Pepper Shaker Sets we have at FrenchGardenHouse right now, { put shaker in our search box to see what we have found for you} to see them in all their glory!

Be Inspired: Downton Abbey Style

Are you as addicted to Downton Abbey as I am? Season 3 premiered last weekend, and I can’t wait for the next episode. Filmed at Highclere Castle and set at the end of the Edwardian Era, Downton’s interiors encompass the eclectic range of styles and influences from the late Victorian to late Edwardian era. While I adore the story, it’s the interiors, furniture, luscious fabrics and gorgeous clothing that keeps me waiting with great anticipation each week.

Obviously as enamored with soft, pastel colors as we are, the rooms are filled with antique furniture pieces upholstered in rich brocades, floral patterns, gilt mirrors, and chandeliers to reflect and catch the light. Then there are the pillows, the antique books, the silver tea services, and all things that make our heart beat faster. The beautiful feminine style is balanced with just a few darker wooden pieces to make the interiors classic, and not too overdone.  And let me just point out those stunning chandeliers again!

A close up of the chandelier in the drawing room room, above, literally dripping with cut crystal prisms, to reflect the light a thousand times around the room.  The Grantham family loves gilt details, the moldings in this room are grandly embellished with gilt, the French style chairs, the frames, all subtle but elegantly done. Since electric lighting was just beginning to be introduced in these grand homes, most chandeliers were converted at the time.

In the Edwardian era Downton Gothic inspired salon, the color palette is slightly darker.  This was the center of most of the family’s social gatherings.  Unusual wall coverings in this room are made of leather, note the huge fireplace, and the japanned chests so beloved by the Victorians.  Such a beautiful space to entertain guests!

The Music Room features beautifully  polished wood floors layered with rich oriental rugs, the baroque ceiling was painted by Francis Hayman in the 1730’s.  On the walls, Italian 16th century Italian embroideries, beautifully ornate.  The love of gilt abounds, from the frames of the chairs to the details all around, set off perfectly by the simple English Tea Table. {notice the French Toleware flower container too!}

One of the many guest bedrooms on the south side of the home.  Again, gilt touches bring grace an elegance to this room, with the Bergeres Chairs, and the ornate French Mirror.  Another fireplace for warmth, and sumptious Lace hangings on the bed make this a wonderful room for a guest. {maid included!}

Downton Abbey has brought back our love for the charming Edwardian era. There is no reason why you can’t adopt a little of the Granthams’ inimitable elegant style  into your own home!   There are opportunities grande and small….start with a silver  teapot & a collection of delicate porcelain teacups, or go grand scale with a pair of elegant French Bergeres, then add chandeliers, antique vanities, a lovely oil painting or two.  Don’t neglect your boudoir, either, with vanities, dressing sets, even gloves and jewelry.  Below are our top choices for getting that charming Downton look:

Love Yourself, Love Your Life: Admire Yourself.

A new year, and the perfect time to start a new series. I’ll be speaking at an inspiring event this year, (a scary thing for me!) to encourage women, and I want to share my thoughts, notes and topics with all of you here, too!

Hurray! You’ve made it through another year. This next year is the year I challenge you to admire yourself. Yes, you read that right. Yourself.

admire {ad’mi(a)r} (verb) 1. regard with wonder, delight
and pleased approval. 2. marvel at 3. treasure.
4. be in awe of. 5. respect. 6. have a high opinion of.
7. think the world of. 8. look up to.

I think we are all quite good at admiring other people. I know I have a long list of women I admire.  But me? I don’t really think of myself that way…I bet few of us do.

But I know that in order to have a happy life, to really love your life, you have to love yourself. Unconditionally. period.  Now I’m not talking about thinking you are better than everyone else. Or about being so enamored with your looks, your house or your (fill in whatever here) that it’s unhealthy. But truly, you know what I mean. It’s about refusing to hear that little voice inside, that little girl {or boy} voice, who still says “I’m really not good enough!”  Trust me, I hear her lots of times, especially when I am online “comparing” myself to others. {a bad habit I’m committing to break this new year}

Here are some ways to help you admire yourself:

*Write a list of a few people you admire, and really think about the virtues you admire about them.

(kind, loving, smart, strong, independent, creative, generous etc.)

* Now write a list about YOU….and write down four of your strongest attributes. Don’t be shy, this is your own personal list, about you and for you.

* Say these out loud. I know it may seem silly. But the spoken word has power.

* Write down the four attributes that really speak most to you about YOU.  And then read them daily, out loud.

That’s it! You are on your way to being kinder to you.  I so desire that 2013 is a year for all of us to talk to ourselves in a way that we talk to our very best friend.  With love, tenderness and encouragingly.  I am not there yet, but I am enjoying the journey of discovering that God created me to be ME…not someone else.  He has gifted me with gifts and talents, especially for my purpose, and the same is true of you.

I may not get there all at once (often my little voice still says mean things to myself) but I am enjoying the journey, and am embracing the joy of discovering the woman I am becoming. Please share what few kind words you have decided to say to yourself about yourself in the comments with all of us.

Holiday Hospitality

Offering hospitality with an old fashioned flair envelops your guests in a charming spirit of warmth, generosity and good will. You may not have a houseful of servants to cater to your guests’ every whim, but you can anticipate their needs and help them feel welcomed and pampered. Here are a few tips I wrote for the article on Victorian Hospitality in the December issue of Victorian Homes Magazine.

1. A Gracious Welcome. On their arrival, treat your guests to tea or coffee in your living room. Set a tray in front of a blazing fire, use your best silver and pretty porcelain teacups, and arrange treats with greenery. After traveling, everyone loves to sit, sip a cup of tea and say hello.

2. Treat guests like Family. Give guests their own key to your home, attach to a holiday ribbon and tag. A shedule of your holiday events will allow them to plan their time, include a nap and private time, while still enjoying all the holiday traditions with your family and friends. Add a map of the local area, as well as a list of “must see” places, shops and restaurants.

3. Graceful Guest Room Upgrades. Anticipate your guest’s needs by putting yourself in their place. Think like a luxury B & B owner. Freshen the room with clean, crisp Antique sheets, fold an extra blanket on the end of the bed. Nestle a cozy reading chair next to the bed, add a fresh flowers, a stack of books, and a water carafe.

Hang a festive cone or stocking on the bedpost, fill fill greenery and a small ornament keepsake.

Place a welcome basket at the foot of the bed, filled with soap, shampoo, perhaps some slippers, a robe, extra towels, a holiday treat, and a seasonal candle & matches.

4. Extra Good Mornings. Early in the morning, bring a tray with individual pots of tea and coffee to your guest’s room on a tray. Add a little nosegay of roses.

5. A Place to Write. If you have the room, a little desk filled with stationary, pens and stamps is a very thoughtful touch. Put a photograph of your guests in a frame to display on the desk, and let them take this home with them when they leave as a memento.

6. Breakfast Bar. The days leading up to Christmas can be hectic. Let everyone serve themselves breakfast at their leasure {and without YOU feeling like a short order cook} by setting up a beautiful breakfast bar in your kitchen. Provide foods that are easy to serve at room temperature, so that everyone can help themselves over a period of time.

Arrange food on a buffet, or even the corner of your kitchen counter. Layer an antique lace tablecloth under the dishes, use your silver to serve, and add a few greens and berries for decorations. Stacks of plates, silverware, glasses and cups. they don’t have to match, making for a fun conversation starter!

7. Set a simple, but thoughtful table. For a meal you will all share, think outside the box to set a pretty table. Here, I used antique union cases with a personal message inside as a special surprise for each guest.

8. Enjoy yourself! Don’t let the perfectionist in you take over. Plan ahead, then enjoy being with your guests. Laugh, do fun things, take a nap, let them help you, and take it easy.

Happy Holidays!
