French Home Tour: French Design in Lille

Mix a nineteenth century home, antiques and modern design and what do you get?  A charming, fun home to a family with four children with some very serious antiques, that doesn’t take itself too seriously and is wonderfully comfortable.

This beautiful old home in the suburbs of Lille, in the north of France, was thoroughly renovated.  Painted in the family’s beloved shades of purple, I love the contrast of old and new.  The hall above showcases a wonderful collection of architectural prints, all framed in the same gilded frames.

I love this stunning combination of purple with the gold and black.  How great to be able to dine here with family and friends, the fire blazing, and the chandelier shining bright, while outside all is dark. So cozy!

For the kitchen, the owners chose ultra modern!  Great lighting over the island, and you can see the formal dining room thru the doorway.  Note that everything in this room is sleek and modern, a cook’s delight!

One of the upstairs bedrooms, again with a fantastic collection of antique furniture and accessories. This time the paint is lavender, a softer version of the dining room color.

Upstairs, the bath is sleek and modern, but the tile floor pays homage to the past.

One of the children’s bedrooms, pink, this is completely furnished with antiques.  I love the chandeliers, the fireplace {non working as you can see since it has a doll settee inside}, the bed and the antique Victorian children’s clothing.  A great room, one I think every little girl would adore.

I love this house, I think it’s a lesson in French elegance. What do you think about the charm of yesterday combined with the comfort of today?  Love it? hate it? I’d love to hear your opinion…..

This house is absolutely lovely – i do like this combination very much. I am doing it, too, however, I do not have so expensive antique furniture. Regards, Nik

I love this house! It is gorgeous, convenient, yet it retains its charm, too. Very lovely post! I think the kitchen works because it is so clean. I like that there are no upper cabinets, but work station “islands.” Very neat!

I love the workstation too, Ricki Jill. I would probably stick to a more traditional looking kitchen, but I do adore the contrast of this one.
