Christmas at Home: Last minute small touches

I spent most of today working on some last minute petite decorations here at home. The big shipping rush is over, and today was the perfect {and pretty much l a s t} day to decorate a few areas with just a little holiday touch.  Of course we have a tree at home, a mantel decoration, and lights and greens, but often it’s the small touches that make all the difference.

I mostly used what I have had for years, found in my craft room, office or repurposed things I came across. There is something so gratifying when I use my “old things” in a new way.  And to be honest, this year I went really really “low key” at home.  After setting up two Christmas photo shoots here in August and September….low key sounded good.  I found some of the packages I used last year for a photo shoot, and displayed those in a few rooms, they look great as a decorative “object” just as they are.

In the living room, I actually cleaned the crystals on the chandelier first, I know it’s not decorating, but a clean crystal reflects light so much better. Sometimes I forget what a difference even a little bit of dust can make.  I just use Clorex wipes, works like a charm when you don’t want to take them all off and hand wash them {which I never really feel like doing}!

A fresh wreath which I bought at the little fresh produce stand in our neighborhood hangs over the mantel. I just stuck in little branches of Holly, which I also bought there. A green ribbon is all it takes to make this wreath & mirror festive.

I piled some antique ornaments in a silver bowl, these look pretty just as they are, they don’t need anything else to say CELEBRATE.

On another little table, I displayed these old Christmas ornaments which really are too shabby for the tree, and look great in the glass pedestal.  They look like mercury glass, but are really just really inexpensive ornaments that aged like that because they weren’t the greatest quality!

Even the kitchen armoire got just a little touch of holiday, I added a glittering star and some fresh greens to my collection of ironstone.  On Christmas eve I light the candles inside that I placed in the antique French baking forms.  {If you do this, be sure, really sure, that the flame is not near anything flammable or the shelf above it}

Some bright candy canes make my favorite old Hotel Badger silver cup happy. Greens from the garden add a little fresh scent

Outside, my little FrenchGardenHouse in the garden has a sweet display with candles.

Just a few small touches for the holidays make a wonderful difference. It doesn’t all have to be the grand jesture.  Do you finish your decorating all at once? Or do you do the larger things {tree, mantel, lights} and then putter around for a few days leading up to Christmas?
